Milk is produced not only from cattle, but also sheep, goats, yaks, water buffalo, horses, reindeer and camels.
Thousands of years ago a mutation spread through northwestern Europeans which enabled them to produce lactase into adulthood allowing milk to be used as an alternate food source.
