Genetic research of lemons show that they are a hybrid of sour orange and citron.
A small evergreen tree, the Lemon (Citrus limon) is believed to be native to South Asia, possibly Burma or Southern China, and some have linked it to Assam, Northeast India but its true origin is unknown.
Citrus medica (the citron) was the first citrus fruit to reach the Mediterranean. The lemon tree was first recorded in literature in an Arabic treatise about farming in the 10th century, but it was not until AD 700 that it was being cultivated in Persia, Iraq and Egypt.
Between AD 1000 and 1150, Arab traders distributed lemons throughout the Mediterranean region. The Romans and early Islamic gardeners used lemon trees as ornamental plants.
Europeans spread the lemon tree to the Americas, Australia, and the rest of the world.
Lemons are high in vitamin C and are thought to have many health benefits.
Look for smooth skinned, firm fruits. Avoid blotchy, mushy, or oversoft fruits.
Substitutes for lemon: Limes, Grapefruit, Oranges, Citron. Note that orange and citron are both sweeter and much less tart than lemons.
