A grapefruit is a subtropical fruit that originated in Barbados, possibly as a result of the accidental crossing of sweet oranges and pomelo fruit.

On the outside, grapefruits are smooth, round, and slightly pink in color. On the inside, grapefruits are bitter, slightly sweet, and juicy. The fruit is usually eaten fresh.

There are three main grapefruit producing states in the United States: Florida, California, and Texas. Grapefruit trees can reach 45 feet tall and grow best in subtropical climates.

Vitamin C and fiber are abundant in grapefruit, and grapefruit may lower cholesterol and have antioxidant properties. One half grapefruit provides 6 grams of fiber and the daily amount of vitamin C required by the body.

Ensure that the fruit is firm and almost uniform in color with no blemishes.
