Doraji, also known as the bellflower plant or platycodon, is native to Korea and other East Asian countries. Its roots, shaped and sized similar to ginseng, are used both fresh and dried. Namul or bibimbap are commonly topped with them as a side dish.
Traditionally, doraji has served as a home remedy for various respiratory conditions and is not just a common root vegetable in Korea. Doraji has a bitter, peppery taste in its natural state, but when it is properly prepared, it has a hint of sweetness and a slightly bitter aftertaste.
There is also cultural significance to Doraji in Korea. One of the most popular folk songs in North and South Korea is "Doraji Taryeong," which originates from Eunyul in Hwanghae Province. Besides China, where it is known as Toraji, the song is also sung by ethnic Koreans in Japan.
