The cantaloupe is native to Persia and Western Asia.
Sometime around 2400 BCE they found their way into the valley of the Nile where they were cultivated and further spread to Europe and East Asia.
The cantaloupe belongs to the family of muskmelon fruits. It is likely related to watermelons. It ranges in size from 1 pound (5 kilograms) to around 11 pound (5 kilograms). There are two types of cantaloupe: North American and European. European cantaloupes have oblong bodies with light green skins, while North American cantaloupes have round bodies with lighter brown skins and firm, sweet flesh.
