Pears originated in western China and some were brought to the west, resulting in a modified shape and taste, like the well-known Bartlett pear. Others were transported eastward to Korea and Japan, becoming more similar to apples in shape and texture. The Korean pears were selectively cultivated to be larger than other Asian pears, with a crisp, grainy texture and mild sweetness. In Asia, these types of pears were exclusively enjoyed by the nobility and wealthy for centuries. Nowadays, Asian pears are the most sought-after fruit throughout the continent.

As the Asian pear gains familiarity, its popularity expands globally. Initially brought to California by Chinese laborers during the Gold Rush, the diversity of trees grown from seed ranged in quality. In the early 1900s, specific named varieties with distinct traits were cultivated in Asia and exported from China, Japan, and Korea. Along with this, there have been programs by universities and a handful of private breeders in the USA who have introduced new varieties.

Korean Pears are larger than the common Asian pear, and are a favorite gift when visiting relatives or friends.

Korean pears are a delicious treat that can be served as a desert, included in salads, used in marinades, or eaten as a snack.

The trees grow quickly and can produce fruit as early as three years from planting.

Our back yard garden was graced with a couple of accidental Korean pear trees when Mother in Law discarded a few seeds from pears she was snacking on.
The trees grew very quickly to about 10 feet in height and by their third year were producing large delicious fruits.
