Yakbap, also known as Yaksik or Yakshik, is a traditional Korean dish containing honey, which in ancient Korea was revered as a medicinal food.
The dish is made by steaming sweet rice and mixing it with chestnuts, jujubes, and pine nuts, along with honey, sesame oil, soy sauce, and sometimes cinnamon. It has a soft, sticky texture and a sweet, slightly salty taste.
In Korean culture and tradition, yakbap holds a special place. It is traditionally prepared for the first full moon of the New Year, a date known as Jeongwol Daeboreum, according to the lunar calendar. Korean New Year’s Day (Seollal), Korean Harvest Festival (Chuseok), wedding receptions, and even 60th birthday parties often serve it as part of the celebration.
A variety of methods exist for preparing Yakbap. Some people prefer the traditional method in a steamer, which can take up to seven hours to prepare and cook. However, there are also simpler methods using a rice cooker. In any case, Yakbap is an excellent dish that offers a taste of Korean culture, regardless of how it is prepared. [2]
